Saalbach-Hinterglemm suits keen skiers and summer mountain bikers, with lively Saalbach and quieter Hinterglemm in one Skicircus valley. Homes are spread along the area, so check which end you are booking. Most sleep around five and about half have a sauna.
Saalbach-Hinterglemm is two villages about 2 km apart in one long valley, at roughly 1,000 and 1,100 metres. Saalbach, the former municipal centre, has most of the bars and discos, and Hinterglemm, higher up, is quieter. The valley road climbs about 15 km from Maishofen to reach them. The homes are scattered around the area over several kilometres rather than in one cluster. The lifts join the Skicircus with Leogang and Fieberbrunn in Tirol. Winter is the main season, with a free ski bus on the valley road for pass holders. Summer is about hiking trails, mountain bikes and Postbus services up the valley.
Linked into the Skicircus lifts, and home to the EPIC Bikepark Leogang, which draws riders in summer.
The Tirol end of the Skicircus, reached by the lift link in ski season.
Where the valley road begins, about 15 km below the villages and the start of the free winter ski bus.
The nearest railway station, with a Postbus up the valley roughly every one to two hours by day.
Salzburg airport is the nearest practical option, around an hour and a half by road. Zell am See is the nearest railway station, with a Postbus up the valley roughly every one to two hours by day, or a taxi. A car helps with homes spread along the valley, though a free winter ski bus links both villages.
Skiing in the Skicircus runs from the end of November to mid-April. In winter a free ski bus links Maishofen and both villages for pass holders, and Saalbach's bars are busy. In summer the cable cars carry hikers and bikers, and the Joker Card, included with partner accommodation, covers several gondolas. Ask whether your accommodation is a partner before relying on it.
Saalbach is, Hinterglemm far less so. Saalbach has most of the discos and bars and a night bus, while Hinterglemm has one disco and a few bars. Choose the upper end of the valley for sleep.
Saalbach for nightlife and the former village centre, Hinterglemm for a quieter stay about 2 km further up at roughly 1,100 metres. Both lie on the same free winter ski bus route.
Yes. Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn are linked as the Skicircus, which spans Salzburg and Tirol. The season runs from the end of November to mid-April.
Aimed at hikers and bikers. Cable cars serve signposted trails, more than 120 km of bike lines and trails spread over 7 mountains, and Leogang has the EPIC Bikepark.
About half do. Gardens are uncommon, most homes sleep around five, and none has a private pool. Fireplaces are found in only a few.
