Kaprun suits two-season trips: the Kitzsteinhorn glacier is above the village and Zell am See's lake is a short bus ride away. Many homes here have a sauna. The catch is that this is a ski and sightseeing village rather than a quiet retreat, and the lake is not on your doorstep.
Kaprun is a village of about 3,200 people at 786 metres, on the northern slopes of the Glockner Group, and the Kapruner Ache joins the Salzach just south of it. Our homes cluster within a few kilometres of the centre, mostly apartments for around four to six and some larger chalets, and many have a sauna. The 3K K-onnection cable car runs from the village centre via the Maiskogel to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, where the Top of Salzburg platform stands at 3,029 metres. In summer the draw is the Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden reservoirs at 2,036 metres and the Sigmund Thun gorge. Tauern Spa World, the second largest spa complex in Austria, is the wet-weather answer.
Lakeside town about 10 km away. Bus line 660 takes around 23 minutes. Summer brings swimming, paddleboarding and boat trips; in winter it has the Schmittenhöhe lifts.
Reached by cable car from Kaprun. The Top of Salzburg viewing platform is at 3,029 metres, with the Grossglockner visible from it.
Two reservoirs at 2,036 metres above the village, held back by some of Austria's largest dam walls. Visitors can hike there or climb the dam.
A gorge carved by the Kapruner Ache, over 30 metres deep and 320 metres long.
Salzburg is the practical airport, about 84 km and roughly an hour and a quarter by road. Ryanair from Stansted and British Airways from Gatwick fly there all year. Without a car, take the train from Salzburg to Zell am See, then the line 660 bus for the last 10 km to Kaprun.
Glacier skiing at Kaprun runs from October to May, so it suits early and late winter trips, and the wider area has pistes from mid-October to mid-May. In summer the reservoirs, the gorge and around 400 km of hiking trails take over, and Lake Zell is used for swimming, paddleboarding and boat trips. Tauern Spa World covers rainy days in either season.
Yes. The Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski area runs from October to May and is reached by cable car from the village. The top platform stands at 3,029 metres.
Kaprun sits right below the glacier, with the cable car leaving from the village centre. Zell am See is about 10 km away, a 23-minute ride on bus line 660, and has the lake and the Schmittenhöhe lifts. Pick Kaprun for the glacier, Zell for the waterfront.
Hiking is the main activity, with the Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden reservoirs and the Sigmund Thun gorge nearby. The region has around 400 km of hiking trails and 200 km of bike trails, and Tauern Spa World covers wet days.
Yes, with a change. Trains run from Salzburg to Zell am See, then bus line 660 covers the roughly 10 km to Kaprun in about 23 minutes. A hire car from Salzburg airport takes roughly an hour and a quarter.
