Ried im Oberinntal is where the road up to Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis leaves the Inn valley, so it works as a base for that ski area. The lifts are up the hill, about 23 minutes by bus to Serfaus, so expect to drive or ride most days.
Ried im Oberinntal is a village in the upper Inn valley and the starting point of the road that climbs to Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis. Those three villages share a sunny plateau about 400 to 500 metres above the valley floor, and winter tourism is their main industry. The homes here are spread over several kilometres around Ried, nearly all with a garden, and none sleep more than seven. They suit one family rather than a big party. There is no pool or sauna. For the lifts, the shops and evening meals you head up the plateau by bus, taxi or car.
Plateau village with a small air-cushion underground railway that lets it ban private cars; the bus from Ried takes around 23 minutes.
Plateau village that shares Berta's Kinderland with Ladis, and has floodlit skiing at the Möseralm on Tuesday evenings.
The third plateau village, where the Lader Schlossweiher pond is used for ice skating in winter.
The cultural centre of western Tyrol, ringed by high mountains and probably the densest cluster of castles in the state.
Innsbruck Airport is the practical choice; the drive to Serfaus, up the road from Ried, takes about an hour and a quarter. By public transport you take the train to Landeck-Zams and then a bus. A car is the easiest way to reach the homes.
Winter is the main season, since tourism on the plateau lives mainly from the ski months, and Fiss has floodlit skiing one evening a week. Check lift and bus timetables for the week you plan to visit, particularly at the start or end of a season.
Close enough to commute, not close enough to walk. Line 220 buses and taxis cover the Ried to Serfaus run in roughly 20 to 25 minutes, and the lifts are on the plateau above the village.
Yes, mainly because of the ski area above it. About 125,000 square metres are reserved for children, there are two ski schools taking pupils from age 3, and childcare is available.
It is a small underground railway running on air cushions, 1,280 metres long with four stations, and opened in 1985. It lets Serfaus ban private cars, and riding it is free.
