Nauders suits skiing families and border-hoppers, with 75 km of pistes above the village and Italy just over the Reschen Pass. Homes are mostly mid-sized with a garden, and some take groups of eight or more. None has a pool or sauna, and it is a long drive up from the Inn valley.
Nauders is a village of around 1,500 people at 1,394 metres, below the Reschen Pass and near the tripoint with Switzerland. The summit of the pass, at 1,504 metres, is in Italy. The trade route over it was part of the Roman Via Claudia Augusta, and the area was later run from Naudersberg Castle, a fortress built in the early 14th century. Above the village the ski area climbs from about 1,400 to 2,800 metres. The homes are spread through the village; most have a garden, a typical one sleeps around five and a few take eight or more.
Just over the Italian border, the reservoir built in 1950, with the old bell tower rising from the water in front of Graun.
The narrow Inn gorge on the road up from Pfunds, where a fortress went up in 1472, and the later Hochfinstermünz fortress on the new road.
A road west through the Sesvenna Alps leads to Martina in Switzerland's Lower Engadin valley.
Innsbruck airport is around an hour and a quarter by car. Without a car, take the train to Landeck-Zams and then bus 273, a little over two and a half hours in all. In winter a free ski bus links the five areas of the two-country ski arena.
Winter brings the Bergkastel slopes, reaching about 2,800 metres, and a children's area at the Bergkastel top station. In summer the pull is the border country, with roads south over the Reschen Pass into Italy and west into Switzerland.
About 75 km of pistes, split between easy, intermediate and difficult runs, plus 6 km of ski routes. The area climbs from around 1,400 to roughly 2,800 metres, with lifts including the Bergkastelbahn and Zirmbahn.
It is a certified family ski area. The Nauderix Kinderland at the Bergkastel top station has an adventure forest, a snow tunnel and a mini snowpark, and beginners have their own training area at the valley station.
Yes, on the same holiday. Nauders belongs to a two-country ski arena with areas in South Tyrol such as Schöneben and Haideralm by the Reschensee, and a free ski bus connects them, so a day in Italy needs no car.
That is the bell tower rising from the Reschensee reservoir in front of Graun, just over the Italian border. The reservoir was built in 1950, and the tower is what it is known for.
