Pfunds, in Tyrol's upper Inn valley, suits big families and groups who want to ski Samnaun, linked by lift to Ischgl. Many homes here sleep eight or more. Samnaun is a drive of around 17 minutes, so ski days start in the car or on the bus, and none of the homes has a pool or sauna.
Pfunds is a municipality of about 2,600 people at around 970 metres, 19.7 km south of Landeck and 5 km short of the Swiss border, close to the tripoint with Italy. It is made up of two villages, Pfunds-Dorf and Pfunds-Stuben, plus a scatter of hamlets, and tourism is its main living. The village was first recorded in 1282. This is where roads part: one branches off into Switzerland and duty-free Samnaun, the other climbs on towards Nauders and the Reschen Pass. The homes are close together and run large, and many have a garden.
Swiss duty-free village at 1,846 metres, around 17 minutes by car, with lifts linking its slopes to Ischgl's Silvretta Arena.
Up the road from Pfunds towards the Reschen Pass, with 75 km of pistes in the ski area above the village.
Pfunds lies 19.7 km south of this town, where you leave the A12 Inn valley motorway for the road up the valley.
From Innsbruck, follow the A12 Inn valley motorway west to the Landeck exit, then the Reschen road up the valley to Pfunds. That is also the recommended way into Samnaun, as the Swiss approach is not winter-safe. Bus 921 runs hourly from Pfunds Kajetansbrücke to Samnaun, but bring a car.
In winter the pull is Samnaun's slopes, linked by lift to the Silvretta Arena at Ischgl, with the Samnaun side usually less crowded. Shopping in duty-free Samnaun, where only Swiss VAT applies, works in any season, but mind the customs allowances on the way back.
About 11 miles, or around 17 minutes by car. Bus 921 also runs hourly from the Kajetansbrücke stop in Pfunds up to Samnaun, a slower but cheap option on ski days.
Yes, by way of Samnaun. Its ski area connects to Ischgl's Silvretta Arena by several lifts, and the Samnaun side is usually the less crowded of the two.
It suits them well. Many homes in Pfunds sleep eight or more, a few take very large parties and many have a garden, though none has a pool or sauna.
Over the border in Samnaun it is. The village is a customs exclusion zone where only Swiss VAT is charged, so fuel, tobacco and alcohol cost noticeably less, but Austrian and Swiss import limits still apply.
