Gortipohl is a small Montafon village between St. Gallenkirch and Gaschurn, and suits walkers and skiers wanting a quiet mid-valley base. Check how you will reach the lifts before booking, and plan on flying into Zurich.
Gortipohl is a village of well under 700 residents in the Montafon, the long valley of the River Ill in Vorarlberg. It lies up the valley from St. Gallenkirch and before Gaschurn, with a small waterfall formed by the Balbierbach in the village itself. It has a branch church, a primary school, a kindergarten, tennis courts and a Kneipp facility, but it is not a resort centre. The homes are packed into a very small area, most with a garden, and they mostly sleep four to six, with a few for ten. None have a pool or sauna. Nights are quiet.
The next village down the valley; just beyond it, at Galgenul, the road to the Gargellen ski area branches off.
The next village up the valley, where the road carries on towards Partenen.
The main town of the Montafon, further down the valley.
The highest village in the Montafon at 1,423 metres, with its own ski area.
Zurich Airport is the realistic gateway: the drive to Silvretta Montafon takes about two and a half hours, while trains via Bludenz take around three and a half. Once in the valley a car makes Gortipohl far easier than relying on connections.
The valley works in two seasons. Winter brings skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing; summer brings hiking, mountain biking and climbing in the Silvretta, Verwall and Rätikon ranges. Check lift opening dates before booking either end of a season.
Gortipohl lies in the middle of the Montafon valley in Vorarlberg, between St. Gallenkirch downvalley and Gaschurn upvalley. Schruns, the valley's main town, is further down, and the main valley road passes through Gortipohl.
Treat it as a village base rather than a lift-side resort, because lift access for Gortipohl itself is not something to assume. The best-known ski area is Silvretta Montafon, and the road to Gargellen branches off at Galgenul, just past St. Gallenkirch.
Yes, if you walk or bike. The Montafon has hiking in the Verwall, Silvretta and Rätikon ranges and about 260 km of mountain bike trails, while the village itself is small and quiet.
Choose Schruns for the valley's main town, and Gortipohl for a smaller, quieter village further up the valley. Gortipohl is small, with about 665 residents.
