Bad Gastein suits skiers and spa-goers who want a Belle Epoque town built around a waterfall. Lifts reach the Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel area. Streets are steep and the homes are mostly small, with no pools.
Bad Gastein is a spa town whose centre sits at the Gastein waterfall, about 1,000 metres above sea level. The water falls about 340 metres over three levels, right through town. Hotels and houses in the Belle Epoque style line streets that climb the slope, and a car park lift rising over 11 floors covers part of the height difference. Our homes are mostly small, sleeping around four, and are spread over a couple of kilometres. None has a pool or sauna, so the Felsentherme in town, with four spa areas surrounded by natural rock walls, does that job. Expect hills and steps wherever you stay.
A market town about halfway between Dorfgastein and Bad Gastein, with the Alpentherme beside the Schlossalmbahn lift.
Home to the valley's mining museum, which has a show mine and gold washing, and the Tauernschleuse car shuttle to Mallnitz.
The highest winter sports area in Ski amadé, reaching 2,650 metres and described as snow-secure.
Reached by the Stubnerkogelbahn up to 2,250 metres, with a suspension bridge billed as the highest in Europe.
Fly to Salzburg airport, about 95 km and roughly an hour and ten minutes by car, or about two and a half hours by airport bus and train. EuroCity and InterCity trains from Salzburg stop at Bad Gastein, so a car is optional, though the steep streets make a taxi or bus handy.
Winter is the main season, with around 200 km of pistes across the valley in the Ski amadé network and 40 km of cross-country trails. Summer brings more than 600 km of hiking trails, mountain biking and stages of the Salzburger Almenweg, a 350 km route in 25 stages. Sportgastein is the highest area and is described as snow-secure.
Yes, as part of a connected area. The Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel slopes link Bad Gastein with Bad Hofgastein, and Sportgastein, the highest winter sports area in Ski amadé at 2,650 metres, is considered snow-secure.
Yes. The centre sits on a slope at the waterfall, and the town has a car park lift over 11 floors just to cover part of the height difference. Anyone with a pushchair or limited mobility should check how far a home is from the centre.
Not strictly. Trains serve Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein, so the valley works without a car. Bring one if you plan day trips or want the Tauernschleuse car shuttle from Böckstein to Mallnitz.
Pick Bad Gastein for the waterfall, the Belle Epoque buildings and the Felsentherme on your doorstep. Bad Hofgastein sits lower, at 859 metres, and has the Alpentherme near where the Schlossalmbahn lift starts in town.
There is. The Felsentherme has four spa areas surrounded by natural rock walls, fed by a valley where 17 hot springs rise from depths of up to 2,000 metres. The Gastein Healing Gallery adds 2.5 km of healing climate, reached by special trains deep inside the mountain at Böckstein.
