Dorfgastein suits couples and small families who want a ski or hiking base at the quiet northern entrance of the Gastein Valley. The cable car leaves from the village centre, and the ski area is shared with the Grossarltal. Homes here are small, mostly for two to four, so larger groups will struggle.
Dorfgastein is a village of about 1,600 people at around 810 metres, at the northern entrance of the Gastein Valley. It is a small, family-friendly community. For centuries Klammstein Castle was the seat of the archbishops' keeper of the valley, before the administration moved to neighbouring Hofgastein. The homes are in and close to the village, a short walk from the valley station of the Dorfgastein cable cars. The castle stands high above the historic trade route and has a museum. Evenings are quiet. Most homes sleep two to four, and most have a sauna and a garden; check each listing.
Dorfgastein shares its slopes with the Grossarltal as the Dorfgastein-Grossarltal ski area, part of the larger Ski amadé region.

Fly to Salzburg: the drive from the airport takes just under an hour. Without a car, take bus 2 from the airport to Salzburg Hbf and the train on to Dorfgastein, which takes around two and a half hours in all. A car is optional if you plan to ski and walk locally.
Winter brings skiing from the Fulseck and many kilometres of cross-country trails. Summer is for walking: the three short GASTI family trails, the Bear Trail to the Amoseralm and a hike to the Paarsee.
The village lifts serve the Dorfgastein-Grossarltal ski area, one of four ski areas in the Gastein Valley and part of the larger Ski amadé region. The cable car leaves from the village centre for the Fulseck and its views.
It is a family-friendly village. In summer the GASTI themed trails take at most an hour and a half, including the Legend Trail with a detour to Klammstein Castle and its museum, and the cable car starts in the centre.
Yes. The Tauern Railway serves the village, with trains from Salzburg Hbf, and bus 2 links Salzburg airport to the main station. The same line continues up to Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein.
