Ried-Mörel suits skiers and walkers wanting the Aletsch Arena with a car at the door, on the cable car line to car-free Riederalp. Homes mostly sleep around six. The village itself is quiet, with skiing and glacier views a cable car ride away.
Ried-Mörel is a village of around 300 people on the cable car line between Mörel and Riederalp, part of the municipality of Riederalp since 2003. Unlike Riederalp, it can be reached by car. Its cable car station sits on the line from Mörel to Riederalp West, about nine minutes away, with cars every five minutes. Old Suonen irrigation channels, first recorded in 1385, once carried Aletsch glacier water here, and the ruined Mancapan castle recalls the counts of Mörel. Evenings are quiet. The homes sit together in the village, mostly sleep around six, and some take eight.
The car-free resort nine minutes away by cable car, in the Aletsch Arena ski area of over 100 km of mostly easy and intermediate pistes.
A 2,333-metre viewpoint reached by gondola, with a sweeping view of the Aletsch Glacier.
A gorge walk that starts in Ried-Mörel and finishes in Blatten near Naters.
A 1901 summer villa on the Riederfurka, now a Pro Natura centre with a free exhibition on mountain nature.
By rail, take the train to Brig, then the regional train to Mörel, about 10 minutes, and the cable car up. A taxi from Brig takes around 11 minutes. Ried-Mörel is on the road, so a car is an option here, unlike at Riederalp.
Winter is the time for the Aletsch Arena's 104 km of pistes and the toboggan run at Moosfluh. In the warmer months walkers head for the Massa Gorge, the Blausee, a small lake at the Moosfluh mid-station, and the Riederalp golf course, said to be Europe's highest.
Yes, and that is its main advantage. Ried-Mörel, Greich and Goppisberg can be reached by car, while tourists cannot drive to Riederalp. The cable car from Ried-Mörel reaches Riederalp West in about nine minutes.
Good as a base, not for ski-in. The Aletsch Arena, with over 100 km of mostly easy and intermediate pistes reaching to Fiesch, is a short cable car ride up to Riederalp.
Choose Ried-Mörel if you want to arrive by car, and Riederalp if you would rather stay in the car-free resort itself. The cable car between them runs every five minutes and takes about nine.
