Randa suits walkers and skiers who want a quiet Mattertal village 15 minutes by train from Zermatt, between the Weisshorn and Dom. The Charles Kuonen suspension bridge is a two-hour hike away. There is little in the evening, and Zermatt's slopes mean a train ride.
Randa is a village of about 425 people at 1,406 metres in the Matter valley, between the Weisshorn and the Dom, with the hamlets of Lerch, Wildi and Attermänze. It was the first tourist resort in the Zermatt area and is still the quiet option. Its history is rough: an avalanche nearly destroyed it in 1819, and in 1991 two huge rockslides dammed the river and flooded part of the village, with a bypass tunnel of nearly 4 km bored afterwards. Over four fifths of the municipality is unproductive land. Randa is known for golf, a natural ice rink and a beginner's lift are close by, and evenings are low-key. The homes mostly sleep around six, and most have a fireplace; check each listing.
A 494-metre footbridge up to 85 metres above the Grabengufer ravine on the Europaweg, about two hours' hike from Randa.
The car-free town around 15 minutes from Randa on the Matterhorn Gotthard train, which runs all year.
The high hiking route between Grächen and Zermatt that passes above Randa and crosses the Charles Kuonen bridge.
Fly to Geneva. From the city, trains to Randa take a little over three hours, with a change at Visp. Randa is on the road and railway up the Matter valley, and Zermatt itself is car-free, so the train is the practical link for days up the valley.
Summer is for the Europaweg, the suspension bridge and golf. Winter brings cross-country trails, a natural ice rink and a beginner's lift close by, with the Zermatt ski areas around 15 minutes away. Check that high paths are open after storms.
About 15 minutes on the Matterhorn Gotthard train, which runs all year. Zermatt is car-free, so the train is the easy way to reach its ski areas and restaurants from Randa.
On foot. The Charles Kuonen bridge is about a two-hour hike from the village, on the Europaweg, and a signed circular path of 8.6 km from Randa takes around four hours at intermediate level.
It works if you are happy to commute. Randa has the Matterhorn cross-country trails, with a natural ice rink and a beginner's lift nearby, but the Zermatt ski areas are about 15 minutes away by train.
The village is lived in and monitored. The 1991 slides flooded part of Randa, and road and railway were rerouted, with a bypass tunnel added. Rock above the old scar still creeps slowly and is watched closely.
