Thalkirch suits walkers and winter hikers wanting the quiet far end of the Safiental, a hamlet on the valley floor at 1,686 metres. Plan travel carefully: in winter the post bus goes on to Turrahus only if you register ahead.
Thalkirch is a scattered Walser settlement on the valley floor at the far end of the Safiental, at 1,686 metres between Piz Tomül and the Bruschghorn. Its church was first recorded in 1441. The Turrahus, a Walser mountain guesthouse about 300 years old, stands by the post bus stop, beside an exhibition barn on the valley's wooden buildings. Around it are scattered houses, barns, hay sheds and alpine huts on the slopes, and the Rabiusa river runs down the wide floor. Evening choices are the Turrahus or the Gasslihof farm pub. The homes are spread along the valley floor around Thalkirch and mostly sleep about four, with one or two larger.
The turning point of a 6 km winter walk from the Turrahus along the Rabiusa, near a frosted cliff used for ice climbing.
The highest permanently inhabited settlement in the valley, with a small homeland museum on the Walserweg.
Down the valley, the end of an 11 km Walserweg stage from Thalkirch, with a shop selling Safiental produce.
Fly to Zurich and take the train from Zurich main station via Chur to Versam-Safien, around two and a quarter hours, then the post bus up the valley, which runs every two hours. In winter it goes on to Turrahus only if you register ahead. Turrahus has few parking spaces.
Winter is quiet and snowy, with a 6 km winter walk to z'Hinderst and the chance of deer, chamois and ibex. Walkers can follow the Walserweg down the valley or old pack trails over to Vals and Splügen. The little museum at Camanaboda opens from May to October on the second and fourth Sundays.
Yes. The post bus runs every two hours from Versam station up to Thalkirch. In winter it goes on to the Turrahus only if you register in advance, so plan ahead.
Plenty. The Walserweg runs 11.1 km down to Safien Platz in about three and a half hours, and old pack trails lead over to Vals by the Tomülpass and to Splügen by the Safierberg.
For winter walkers, very. A 6 km route leaves the Turrahus along the Rabiusa and follows the Zervreila reservoir basin to z'Hinderst, with deer, chamois or ibex possible. Check conditions first, as the path can close in poor weather.
