Surcuolm suits couples and small families wanting a quiet base on the sunny Obersaxen plateau, with trails and the Mundaun slopes nearby. Homes are small, many have a sauna, and this is a plateau of hamlets rather than a resort town.
Surcuolm is a village at about 1,346 metres on the Obersaxen plateau. It merged with Flond in 2009 to form Mundaun, which joined Obersaxen in 2016 as Obersaxen Mundaun. The plateau is a sun terrace about 12 kilometres long, between roughly 1,070 and 1,430 metres, and Obersaxen is a typical Walser community with 29 farms. Homes sit close together around the village, mostly sleeping four, with a sauna in many and a fireplace in a good share. Summer brings hiking and bike trails, scooter rides and gold panning, and the long Mundaun range is good for skiing too.
Surcuolm's partner village in Mundaun, merged with it in 2009 and now part of Obersaxen Mundaun.
Fifteen Baroque chapels were built in the outlying hamlets of Obersaxen, and a Chapels Trail tells their story.
Starting point for a beginner-friendly rafting trip through the Rhine Gorge, and home to the Museum Regiunal Surselva.
Zurich city to Obersaxen is about 1 hour 50 minutes by car. By public transport there is no direct connection: train to Chur, a train on to Ilanz, then Postbus 451 to Obersaxen Meierhof, around 3 hours 15 minutes in all. A car is far easier for Surcuolm itself.
For relaxed skiing, yes. The long Mundaun range is an attractive area for skiing as well as hiking, and the plateau is a sunny terrace between roughly 1,070 and 1,430 metres.
Mostly German. Surcuolm was historically Romansh-speaking, but in 2000 German was the most common language, with Romansh second. Obersaxen is an island of German speakers within the mainly Romansh Surselva, settled by Walser people in the thirteenth century.
Two themed routes tell the story of the plateau: the Walser Trail and the Chapels Trail, the second tied to the 15 Baroque chapels built in the outlying hamlets of Obersaxen. There are also innumerable hiking and bike trails.
Obersaxen, yes, but slowly. There is no direct connection from Zurich: take a train to Chur, another to Ilanz, then Postbus 451 to Obersaxen Meierhof, around 3 hours 15 minutes in all. Getting on to Surcuolm and between the hamlets is easier with a car.
