Zurich suits a city break of a few days, with a car-free old town on the Limmat, swimming in the lake and a train up the Üetliberg. It ranks among the most expensive cities in the world, and our homes are small, with no pools.
Zurich is Switzerland's largest city, with around 440,000 residents, at the north-western tip of Lake Zurich. The old town runs along both banks of the Limmat, with the Grossmünster, the Fraumünster and its Chagall windows, and the Lindenhof, a small hill on the site of a Roman castle with free views and a drinking fountain. Niederdorf is car-free and cobbled, and turns into a lively nightlife area in the evening. Bahnhofstrasse, laid out in 1867, holds some of the city's costliest shops. You can swim in the lake and in the Limmat. Our homes are scattered over about three kilometres of the city, mostly small, with one bedroom for around four people, almost none has a garden and none has air conditioning. Niederdorf is car-free and the main station is an easy walk from it, so you can manage without a car.

Winters are cool and summers warm, with lake and river swimming in the warmer months. During Advent there are Christmas markets, and in winter Flumserberg and Hoch-Ybrig are within reach for skiing. The Grossmünster tower is open to climb, but it needs a ticket, and cobbled Niederdorf streets are best in sturdy shoes.
