Saignelégier suits walkers, riders and horse lovers wanting a small upland town in the Franches-Montagnes, near the Étang de la Gruère moor. It is the home of the Freiberger horse and its August show. The homes are small, sleeping up to five, and evenings are quiet outside show weekend.
Saignelégier is the main town of the Franches-Montagnes, the seat of the district, at 978 metres in canton Jura, with about 2,600 people. It sits on an open, rolling plateau of pasture, grazing horses and cattle, and small spruce woods. The municipality runs from the Doubs river to the Étang de la Gruère moorland reserve. The town has its own brewery, the Brasserie des Franches-Montagnes, and a station on the narrow line between La Chaux-de-Fonds and Glovelier. Les Pommerats, a village within the municipality, is listed in full as a Swiss heritage site. The homes are in the town itself and are small, sleeping two to five.

Fly to Basel. From the city it is around an hour and ten minutes by car, or about two and a half hours by train via Delémont and Glovelier. Trains also run to La Chaux-de-Fonds. A car is the easier choice for the outlying farms and the moor.
The Marché-Concours takes over the second weekend of August, drawing 40,000 to 50,000 people, so book well ahead or avoid it. The easy moorland walk to the Étang de la Gruère has an April to October season, and paths can close in poor weather, so check conditions first.
Every year on the second weekend of August. Founded in 1897 to promote the Franches-Montagnes horse breed, it is one of Switzerland's main horse events, and most visitors come for the races.
Yes. An easy 8.5 km route links the Moulin de la Gruère, the lake, La Theurre and Les Cerlatez with Saignelégier, taking around two hours. Boardwalks cross the boggy ground and it suits children from six.
For a small family who like the outdoors, it works well. The homes sleep up to five, the moorland walks are gentle, and horses graze across the plateau, but there is little nightlife or indoor entertainment.
Saignelégier station is on the line between La Chaux-de-Fonds and Glovelier. From Basel, change at Delémont and Glovelier; the trip takes about two and a half hours.
