Les Breuleux suits couples and small families who want cross-country skiing and quiet walks in the Franches-Montagnes. The village sits at about 1,038 metres among farms and forest. Homes are small, none has a garden, and getting here from any airport takes a good half-day.
This is a farming and manufacturing village in the Franches-Montagnes district of the canton of Jura, first recorded in 1429. Farmland covers most of the municipality and forest most of the rest. The homes are scattered around the village and the neighbouring hamlets rather than in one cluster, and they are small: mostly one bedroom, sleeping up to six, none with a garden of its own. Cross-country trails run at around 1,000 to 1,100 metres, and the upper downhill runs sit at only about 1,070 metres. Eating out centres on the Hôtel-Restaurant de la Balance, and evenings are very quiet. In winter the trails fill with cross-country skiers and snowshoe walkers.
A pond surrounded by a bog and nature reserve, in the municipality of Saignelégier, the seat of the Franches-Montagnes district.
District seat of the Franches-Montagnes, with a cheese dairy, the Marché-Concours hall and a Freiberger horse-tracking outing.
Neighbouring municipality and home of the Fromagerie des Franches-Montagnes cheese dairy, which runs a visitor experience.
Les Breuleux has two small stations on the Tavannes to Noirmont line. From Basel, Zurich or Bern airports, allow around three hours 40 minutes by public transport, and about four hours from Geneva. A car makes the scattered hamlets and the rest of the district much easier.
Winter brings around 41 km of classic and skating cross-country trails, 2 km of them floodlit, and three ski lifts, with snowshoe routes on top. Summer is for hiking and mountain biking across the Franches-Montagnes. The upper runs sit at only about 1,070 metres, so check snow before booking a ski week.
Mostly cross-country. There are around 41 km of classic and skating trails between about 1,000 and 1,100 metres, 2 km of them floodlit, plus three downhill lifts.
Yes. Les Breuleux and Les Breuleux-Eglise are both stations on the Tavannes to Noirmont railway. Expect several hours and changes on the way from any airport, though, and a car helps for exploring further.
For a small family, it works well. Homes here are compact and garden-free, so larger groups will find them tight, but cheese dairies, horses and easy walks keep children busy.
Saignelégier is the district seat, and home to the Marché-Concours hall and a cheese dairy. Les Breuleux is smaller and quieter, with its own stations and cross-country trails, and better if you want a village base.
