Stein SG suits families and walkers wanting a Toggenburg farming village, with buses to Wildhaus and its ski slopes every half hour. Stein's own ski lift closed long ago, though, and the village is small, so plan on travelling for lifts, shops and evenings out.
Stein is a farming village in the Toggenburg, part of Nesslau since 2013, set between the Alpstein, the Churfirsten and the Speer and crossed by the Thur. It sits at about 840 m and has fewer than 400 residents, spread with outlying hamlets such as Breitenau and Hinterberg. A stone arch bridge crosses the Thur and a covered wooden bridge spans the Wissthur stream. The Reformed church dates from 1497, and the Catholic church of St Jacob holds a Rococo pulpit from 1770. The homes are close together in the village. Evenings are quiet; in winter the Stockberg is a popular goal for ski tourers.
Pistes above Wildhaus, Unterwasser and Alt St. Johann, about 68 km in all between 900 and 2,262 m.
Sound trail at Alt St. Johann, one of several sound-themed attractions there alongside the Klangschmiede.
Mountain reached by the Säntis cable car, with Restaurant Säntisgipfel at the summit.
Fly to Zurich. Trains run to Nesslau-Neu St. Johann, the southern end of the Bodensee-Toggenburg line, and the PostAuto bus between Nesslau, Wildhaus and Buchs stops in Stein every half hour. A car helps with shopping and walks.
Not from the village itself. Stein's Eggli-Stiegenrain lift closed in 2001, so downhill skiers take the bus to Wildhaus or drive to the Toggenburg ski area, while ski tourers head for the Stockberg, a popular touring peak.
Reasonably. The PostAuto line between Nesslau, Wildhaus and Buchs serves the village every half hour, and Nesslau-Neu St. Johann is the end station of the Toggenburg railway.
Quiet and rural. This is farming country by the Thur, with hamlets, old bridges and paths such as the Risi-Stockberg area for hiking, and the Klangweg sound trail is nearby at Alt St. Johann.
Some do. Homes here usually sleep around six, a few sleep up to ten, and most have a garden. Pools and saunas are less common, so check each listing.
