Quinten suits couples who want a car-free wine hamlet on the Walensee, reached only by boat or on foot, under the Churfirsten. Most homes are small, for two. Arriving with luggage takes planning, and there is very little in the hamlet itself.
Quinten is a hamlet of a few dozen people on the north shore of the Walensee, part of the municipality of Quarten in the canton of St. Gallen. No road reaches it: you arrive on the ferry from Murg or on foot along the path from Walenstadt or Weesen. Sheltered by steep mountains south-west of the seven Churfirsten peaks, it has one of the mildest climates north of the Alps, and figs, kiwis and vines grow here. The homes are together in the hamlet and are mostly small, for couples. With no cars, evenings are very quiet.

Start of the Quinten Seeweg, a signposted 11 km walk to Quinten taking about three and a half hours, rated medium.
Waterfalls above the Walensee that plunge almost 600 m, among the highest in Europe; lake boat trips detour to see them.
Fly to Zurich and take the train towards the Walensee via Ziegelbrücke. There is no road to Quinten, so the last stretch is the ferry from Murg or the lakeside path from Walenstadt or Weesen. A car is no use in the hamlet itself.
Quinten's southern position and shelter keep it mild, and the lakeside walk from Walenstadt along the southern slopes is popular in the colder seasons too. Depending on the season and the weather, the path may be blocked or interrupted, so check with the local information centre before setting out.
By boat or on foot only. Ferries cross from Murg, and a hiking trail comes in from Walenstadt or Weesen; no road reaches the hamlet.
About 11 km, taking around three and a half hours one way with roughly 540 m of climbing. The path is signposted both ways and rated medium, and a boat to Murg makes an easy finish.
Its sheltered spot below steep mountains gives it one of the mildest climates north of the Alps. That is why figs, kiwis and vines grow in the hamlet.
It is better for couples. Most homes here are small with one bedroom, and with no road access everything comes in by boat or on foot.
