Oberegg suits walkers and mountain bikers who want quiet farming hills on the ridge above the Rhine valley. Only a handful of homes are listed, all small, so this is a base for a couple or small family, not a group.
Oberegg is the detached outer part of Appenzell Innerrhoden: a district of about 1,900 people completely surrounded by the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and St. Gallen. It is scattered country, with single farms across meadows and woods, and farming still shapes its economy. Visitors mostly come for the day, for walking and mountain-bike routes, a ski lift running since 1965 and a cross-country trail at Bensol. More than ten places serve food. Our homes are on the high ground around St. Anton, south-west of the village, sleep four or five, have a garden and air conditioning.
A hamlet and viewpoint at 1,110 metres on the ridge road from Oberegg, with a chapel and a view down into the Rhine valley around Altstätten.
Reached by the line 121 Postbus from St. Gallen station, which is the bus leg of the public transport route to Oberegg.
Altenrhein (ACH), about 7 km away, is the nearest airport, and Zurich city is about an hour and a quarter by car. By public transport, take the train to St. Gallen and the line 121 Postbus towards Heiden. A car is much easier.
It is an exclave. Oberegg and Hirschberg were given to Innerrhoden when Appenzell was divided in 1597, and they merged into today's district in 1872. Ausserrhoden and St. Gallen land surrounds it on every side.
Only on a small scale. There has been a ski lift here since 1965 and a cross-country trail in the Bensol area, which suits a few easy days but not a full ski week.
