Krummenau works for families after a house with a garden in a small Toggenburg village on the Thur, with a station on the line to Wattwil. It is a small village of under 700 people, so evenings out mean a drive or train.
Krummenau is a village of under 700 people on the right bank of the Thur in the Toggenburg, canton St. Gallen, and has been part of the municipality of Nesslau since 2013. It was first mentioned in 1266, and a church here is recorded from 1260. Main road 16, between Wil and Buchs, runs through. Dairy and livestock farming, small textile firms, trades and tourism shape the local economy. The natural bridge over the Thur collapsed in 1976, but a covered wooden bridge built in 2008 crosses the Lütisbach at Lütismühle. Across the river the Krummenau-Wolzenalp chairlift heads uphill. The homes are spread in and around the village, and most have a garden; check each listing.
The Benedictine priory of St. Johann moved here after a fire in 1626; its buildings now house the Johanneum, a special education centre.
A village in the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites, close to the Rietbad sulphur spring, known since the Middle Ages.
A summit on the Churfirsten range with its own summit restaurant; from the valley station in Unterwasser, the ride up to Iltios takes about eight minutes.
Fly to Zurich. Krummenau station is on the Wattwil to Nesslau-Neu St. Johann line, served hourly by the S2 of the St. Gallen S-Bahn, so you can arrive by train via Wattwil. With homes spread around the village, a car makes life easier.
Yes. Krummenau has had a rail link since 1912; its station is on the line from Wattwil to Nesslau-Neu St. Johann and is served hourly by the S2 of the St. Gallen S-Bahn.
Some. The Krummenau-Wolzenalp chairlift starts across the Thur and serves the Wolzenalp, a nearby hiking and skiing area, and the Toggenburg has Eastern Switzerland's largest winter sports area. Check lift opening times first.
The famous one has gone: the natural bridge over the Thur collapsed in 1976. A covered wooden bridge, built in 2008, now crosses the Lütisbach at Lütismühle.
