Bächli suits big groups and family gatherings who want a large house in the Toggenburg hills, close to the old village of Hemberg. Most homes here sleep eight or more. It is a small rural place served by a Postbus, so plan on bringing a car.
Bächli is a small village in the pre-Alpine hills of the Necker valley, in the Toggenburg area of canton St. Gallen. Roads lead from here to St. Peterzell, Hemberg, Urnäsch and Schönengrund. It became known across Switzerland after the meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann bought an old farmhouse here in 1989 and turned it into a weather station. Neighbouring Hemberg sits at about 945 m on a hilltop with two church spires, late Baroque Toggenburg houses and a protected townscape; it was once marketed as a climatic health resort for its cool summers. Around both lie meadows and pasture. The homes are in and around Bächli, and most have a garden; check each listing.
Hilltop village with a Riddle Trail, two ski lifts and cross-country trails, including the Scherb trail past several viewpoints.
A treetop walkway at Mogelsberg in the Neckertal, a good choice for a half-day out with children.
The far end of the Schneeschuhtrail Hemberg-Ennetbühl, a snowshoe trail linking the village with Hemberg.
Fly to Zurich. A car is the practical choice. The Postbus between St. Peterzell and Hemberg stops in Bächli, and from Hemberg buses run hourly to Wattwil, but services towards St. Peterzell run mainly at peak hours.
Summer brings the cool weather that once had Hemberg marketed as a climatic health resort, and routes such as the Ofenloch-Weg. In winter Hemberg has two ski lifts and cross-country trails, and a snowshoe trail runs to Ennetbühl. For bigger slopes, the Toggenburg has Eastern Switzerland's largest winter sports area.
Yes, that is its strength. Most homes here sleep eight or more and the largest take far bigger parties, so it suits reunions and multi-family stays. Check each listing for beds and facilities.
On a small scale. Neighbouring Hemberg has two ski lifts and cross-country trails, and a snowshoe trail links it with Ennetbühl. For more pistes, the Toggenburg has Eastern Switzerland's largest winter sports area.
Because of the weather. In 1989 meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann converted an old farmhouse in Bächli into a high-tech weather station and founded his private weather service, Meteomedia, there.
