Alt St. Johann is a good fit for families after a Toggenburg village with its own lift to the Churfirsten slopes and summer hiking. The homes have gardens and most sleep around five. The ski area tops out at 2,262 metres, so this is not high-Alpine skiing.
Alt St. Johann is a village at 895 metres in the upper Thur valley of the Toggenburg, between the seven Churfirsten peaks and the Säntis. A Benedictine abbey was founded here around 1150, and the church of the former abbey has a tower from around 1770. A combined chairlift and gondola climbs from the village to Alp Sellamatt, and the slopes link with Unterwasser and Wildhaus in the Obertoggenburg ski area. The homes sit close together in the village. Each has a garden, most sleep four to six, and a few take much larger groups.
The alp above the village, reached by the four-seat chairlift and gondola from Alt St. Johann, with pistes in winter and hiking in summer.

Zurich airport is about 1 hour 15 minutes by car, roughly 80 km. By public transport it takes about 2 hours 40 minutes, by train via Wil and Wattwil and then bus 790 up the valley. A car gives the most freedom for trips around the valley.
Winter brings skiing on about 60 km of pistes on the Churfirsten, shared with Unterwasser and Wildhaus. In summer the village becomes a starting point for hikes and mountain tours on the Churfirsten and towards the Säntis.
