Zweisimmen suits chalet weeks without a car in the Gstaad region, with the Rinderberg cable car a few steps from the station. The trade-off is that it is a working valley town of about 3,000 people, not a resort village with a lively centre.
Zweisimmen sits at 947 metres where the Gross Simme and Klein Simme rivers meet, and the railway explains most of it. The narrow-gauge line from Montreux and the standard-gauge BLS line from Spiez join here, so you change trains in the middle of town. Our homes sit close to that centre, close to the station, shops and the Rinderberg cable car, which rises to 2,079 metres. From the top, the Horneggli Panorama Trail follows a ridge past the Hornbergsee to a chairlift down to Schönried. Down in the valley there is a trout lake with a lakeside restaurant and a regional museum in a farmhouse from 1647. Evenings are local and low-key, and the town carries on much the same out of season. Most people here speak German as their first language.
A resort with a large ski area, plus Glacier 3000, where snow is guaranteed from December to March and the first summit-to-summit footbridge was built.
The Simmental's highest municipality, a 12.9 km branch line from Zweisimmen, with lifts on both sides of the valley and a spa dating from 1843.
A short way along the Gstaad line, with the Mike von Grünigen toboggan run and the chairlift that ends the Horneggli trail.
Reached by direct train via Zweisimmen since the December 2022 timetable change, with Lake Thun close by.
Zurich is the usual airport, just over two hours by road or around three by train via Spiez. Direct trains also run between Interlaken, Zweisimmen and Montreux. Most of our homes are close to the centre, so a car is optional unless you want to range around the Saanenland.
In winter the Rinderberg-Ronda ski safari links three mountains and valleys in about two hours, and Glacier 3000 near Gstaad has guaranteed snow from December to March. Summer is for ridge walks such as the Horneggli trail, and later the cattle come down from the alpine pastures. Rain or snow falls on about 139 days a year, with around 1,350 mm in all, so pack for wet weather in any season.
It works for a varied ski week rather than a single big mountain. The Rinderberg cable car starts near the station, the Rinderberg-Ronda safari links three mountains in about two hours, and a snow park sits at Saanenmöser nearby.
Yes. Since the December 2022 timetable change a direct service runs from Interlaken via Zweisimmen to Montreux. Zweisimmen is the point where the standard-gauge and narrow-gauge lines meet, which is why through trains matter here.
Pick Zweisimmen for the practical base and Gstaad for the polished one. Gstaad draws the jet set and has the bigger ski area, while Zweisimmen is the junction where the Montreux and Spiez lines meet. Stay one night and the Gstaad Card gives free train and bus travel.
Walking is the main answer. The Horneggli Panorama Trail starts at the top of the Rinderberg, the Forellensee has a lakeside restaurant, and the Obersimmentaler Heimatmuseum occupies a farmhouse from 1647.
