Schönried suits skiers and hikers who want a quiet base in the Gstaad area, with its own railway station. No home here has a pool, and the shops and hotels are mostly in Gstaad, not in the village.
Schönried is a village in the municipality of Saanen, in the canton of Bern, alongside Gstaad and Saanenmöser. With the Horneggli and the Rellerli, known as the sunshine mountain, it makes a good base for hiking. A 5 km winter walk of around an hour and a half leads through forest to Saanenmöser, crossing a ski slope on the way. The Gstaad region has three ski areas plus cross-country trails, winter walking trails and toboggan runs, and in summer hiking, bike routes, via ferratas and bathing lakes. Our homes are tightly grouped, within about half a kilometre, in the village itself. None has a pool, a quarter have a garden and none has air conditioning. Evenings are quiet and small-scale.
Neighbouring village at 1,270 metres, reached from Schönried on an easy 5 km winter walk.
The area's main village, which grew where trails forked towards Valais and Vaud and was rebuilt for tourism after a great fire in 1898.
Reached by cable car from the Gstaad area, with a glacier ski area, the Peak Walk and a suspension bridge.
Lake in the Gstaad area for walks and swims, with Lake Arnen, reached from Feutersoey, as a second option.
Zurich airport is the practical choice. From Zurich it is about two and a half hours by road, or about three and a half hours by train via Spiez and Zweisimmen. Schönried has its own station, so a car is optional.
Winter brings three ski areas around Gstaad, cross-country trails, winter walks and toboggan runs, though a walking route can be blocked by snow or weather. Summer is for hiking, bike routes, via ferratas and the lakes. In the Gstaad area the Züglete, when cows come down from the mountain pastures with flower garlands, is a highlight.
No. Schönried has its own railway station, and a Gstaad Card with an overnight stay gives free train and bus travel between the Saanenland and the Simmental. A car only helps for flexibility on side trips.
Yes. Both are villages in the municipality of Saanen, and the Gstaad Card covers trains and buses between the Saanenland and the Simmental. Gstaad has the car-free centre with its wooden shops and fine hotels; Schönried is the quieter base.
Yes, in winter on a marked 5 km walk that takes around an hour and a half. It is easy, running through snow-covered forest with views of the Simmental and the Horneggli, though it crosses a ski slope.
Hiking, bike routes, via ferratas and bathing lakes, plus Lake Arnen and Lauenensee for walks. Schönried and the Horneggli make a good hiking base, and the Glacier 3000 cable car gives a high-altitude day out.
It suits families who like walking and winter outdoor days: toboggan runs, winter walking trails and cross-country trails are all within the region. There is no pool at any of our homes, so lakes are the summer swim.
