Grindelwald suits walkers and skiers who want the Eiger in view and the Eiger Express up towards the Jungfraujoch. Homes are mostly chalet apartments for about four, a fair few with a fireplace. The catch is popularity: car parks can fill quickly at weekends and in the summer holidays.
Grindelwald sits at about 1,034 metres in a valley closed off by the Bernese Alps from the Wetterhorn to the Eiger, whose north face was first climbed in 1938. It has a long record as a resort: in 1888 it became the first in the Bernese Oberland to open for winter, and the railway arrived in 1890. Almost every home we list is within about two kilometres of the centre, mostly apartments in chalets. Lifts start from two places. The First gondola leaves from the village centre, about ten minutes on foot from the station, while the Männlichen gondola and the Eiger Express start at the Grindelwald Terminal. The Wengernalp railway also climbs from here to Kleine Scheidegg, and a cable car runs up to Pfingstegg.
Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 metres, on the Aletsch Glacier's upper snows; the Eiger Express cuts the trip by 47 minutes.
One of very few car-free resort villages in Europe, reached from Grindelwald by train via Kleine Scheidegg or by gondolas via Männlichen.
Valley of waterfalls, including the 297 metre Staubbach Falls near the village and the Trümmelbach Falls about 3 km further on.
Town between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, with BLS boats on both lakes; trains to Grindelwald leave from Interlaken Ost.
Zurich is the usual airport: about two hours by train to Interlaken Ost, or about two hours by car. Geneva is around three hours to Interlaken. From Interlaken Ost the Berner Oberland Bahn takes about 35 minutes, so a car is optional and parking can be tight.
Winter skiing covers slopes for beginners through to experienced skiers, and the Lauberhorn races over at Wengen are held in January. The Jungfrau summer pass for 2026 runs from early April to late November, and the First adventure activities, including the mountain cart and First Flyer, run from mid-April to late October. Weekends and the summer school holidays are when the car parks fill up fastest.
Yes. Children can ride the mountain cart from Schreckfeld to Bort, walk the 45 metre First Cliff Walk or hike to the Bachalpsee in under an hour from First. Most homes sleep about four, so bigger groups have less choice.
No. The train from Interlaken Ost takes about 35 minutes and the main lifts start in the village or at the Grindelwald Terminal. Drivers should note that the car parks fill quickly at weekends and in summer holidays.
Take the train to Interlaken Ost, about two hours, then change to the Berner Oberland Bahn for roughly 35 minutes more. Driving takes about two hours. Bern is about an hour from Interlaken by train.
Ride the First gondola, 25 minutes from the village, then walk the Cliff Walk or the Bachalpsee trail, about two hours there and back. The Eiger Express takes 15 minutes to Eigergletscher for the Jungfraujoch train.
Grindelwald has a road and car parks; Wengen is one of very few car-free resort villages in Europe and is reached by rack railway from Lauterbrunnen. The two are linked by train over Kleine Scheidegg and by gondolas via Männlichen.
