Adelboden suits families and skiers who want a chalet apartment on the Adelboden-Lenk ski area, with almost 200 km of slopes. Most homes are apartments for about four, and none we list has a pool. The trade-off is access: one road climbs in from Frutigen, and the last leg by public transport is a bus.
Adelboden is a farming and tourist village at the head of the Engstlige valley, with its church and main street at about 1,350 metres. It has a long winter pedigree: Henry Lunn ran the first packaged winter sports holidays here in 1903. Nearly all the homes we list sit within about two kilometres of the centre, mostly apartments in chalets, with very few saunas. The Tschentenalp gondola starts just above the village behind the Hotel Kreuz, and the Engstligenalp cable car climbs to a high plateau at about 2,000 metres. Around 200 km of summer paths and 40 km of winter walking trails start from the village, and families get a cinema, the Ciné Rex, and the Trottiland scooter park.
Cable car to a plateau at about 2,000 metres, past the Engstligen Falls, which drop around 370 metres in two cascades.
The other half of the Adelboden-Lenk ski area, a spa village since 1843 with the Wallbach pool and a railway to Zweisimmen.
A gondola from the village leads to Oeschinen Lake, about 25 minutes on foot from the top station and part of a UNESCO site.
Town at the outflow of Lake Thun, with a twelfth-century castle that now holds a history museum.
Zurich is the usual airport, with Geneva and Basel as alternatives. By rail from Zurich airport, take the train to Frutigen on the Lötschberg line, then bus line 230 up to Adelboden, about 30 minutes; the whole trip takes just under three hours. A car is optional, because the guest card covers local buses.
Winter brings the men's World Cup giant slalom on the Chuenisbärgli each January, on one of the toughest courses on the circuit. The ski region advertises winter from November to May. In early summer about 350 cows are driven up to the Engstligenalp pastures, and July has the Vogellisi festival, the Vogellisi mountain race and a chamber music festival, so summer is about walking with events in the village.
Yes. Children can ride the Globi cableway to Engstligenalp, where there is a Globi playground, and the Vogellisi trail from Sillerenbühl has ten activity points. Most homes are apartments for about four, so larger families should check bedrooms carefully.
No. A post bus runs up from Frutigen station in about 30 minutes, and the guest card gives free travel on local buses around Adelboden and Frutigen. A car helps for day trips to Kandersteg or Thun.
Zurich, about two hours fifty minutes by train to Frutigen and then the bus. Geneva takes roughly three and a half hours and Basel about three, both by rail through Bern or Spiez.
Walking first: there are around 200 km of marked paths, from easy strolls to alpine routes. The Engstligenalp cable car gives views of the falls, and there are mountain bike routes and July festivals.
Large. Adelboden-Lenk combines six sub-areas with almost 200 km of slopes and 63 lifts, including Engstligenalp, Silleren-Chuenisbärgli and Tschentenalp on the Adelboden side and Betelberg above Lenk.
