Les Diablerets suits groups who want a fireside base near the Glacier 3000 cable car, with a ski link to Villars and Gryon. The village sits at about 1,200 metres on the north side of the Diablerets massif, but evenings are quiet and none of the homes has a pool.
This is a valley village along the Grande Eau river, in the municipality of Ormont-Dessus. The homes are spread through and just around the village, and nearly all of them have a fireplace. Expect mid-sized places for six or so, with a few taking groups of eight or more. The village has its own connection into the shared Villars, Gryon and Diablerets ski area, and the Col du Pillon, at 1,546 metres, holds the lowest station of the Glacier 3000 cable car. Evenings mean raclette or a baked Vacherin Mont-d'Or, with the Auberge de la Poste among the village restaurants. A film festival has run here every year since 1969.
Cable car from the Col du Pillon up to Scex Rouge at 2,970 metres, with the Peak Walk between two peaks and the Alpine Coaster summer toboggan run.
Mountain lake with a restaurant beside it, where stand-up paddling is one of the free activities on offer to visitors.
Resort in the shared Villars, Gryon and Diablerets winter area, and a paragliding spot, with flights soaring more than 500 metres above the village.
Geneva Airport is around an hour and 45 minutes by car (about 105 km). By rail, take a train from Geneva Airport to Aigle and change onto the R71 line up to Les Diablerets, which takes about three hours in total. A car helps for reaching the Col du Pillon.
Winter brings skiing on the Villars, Gryon and Diablerets runs and higher up on Glacier 3000, plus cross-country trails, tobogganing and dog sled rides. From spring to autumn the valley turns to hiking, bike trails, via ferrata and paragliding. Between the two seasons, check lift and restaurant opening before you book.
Yes. Les Diablerets has its own connection into the shared Villars, Gryon and Diablerets ski area, so one area covers all three villages. Glacier 3000 is reached separately, by cable car from the Col du Pillon.
For most visitors it is the high point of a stay. The cable car climbs to Scex Rouge at 2,970 metres, where the Peak Walk connects two peaks and the Alpine Coaster runs as a summer toboggan.
You can. The R71 runs up from Aigle on the Aigle, Sépey and Diablerets railway, and trains from Geneva Airport reach Aigle. Allow about three hours in all from the airport, with one change at Aigle.
No. The Black Wall is billed as the steepest black ski slope in the world and is for experts only. Beginners do better on the beginner and intermediate slopes at the glacier's highest altitudes.
