Gryon suits skiers and summer walkers who want a village base on the Villars-Gryon-Les Diablerets slopes, on the railway up from Bex. Most homes have a fireplace and none has a pool. Geneva airport is nearly two hours away by car, and the gondola leaves from La Barboleuse rather than the old village.
Gryon sits on the Bex-Villars-Bretaye rack railway, which runs from Bex station through the village to the Col de Bretaye. Its own ski sector, joined to the Villars side at La Rasse, tops out just under 2,000 metres, with an older gondola from La Barboleuse to Les Chaux and a long chairlift from Sodoleuvre. La Barboleuse, some way from the old village centre, is the heart of the resort. Neighbouring Villars is a chalet village on a sunny plateau at about 1,300 metres. The homes are grouped close together, sleep around five, and most have a fireplace.
The family chalet resort at about 1,300 metres on a sunny plateau, joined to Gryon's ski sector at La Rasse.
Part of the shared ski area, joined to the Villars side by a chairlift that replaced the old link in 2017; Glacier 3000 is reached by cable car.
The town at the bottom of the railway, where salt mines that are still worked are open for tours.
A nearby thermal spa with the warmest thermal waters in Switzerland, for a rest day between ski or walking days.
Geneva airport is a drive of a little under two hours. By rail, trains leave the airport every half hour for Aigle, about an hour and a half away, and the whole journey to Gryon takes around three hours. The Bex-Villars-Bretaye railway from Bex station runs through the village.
Winter brings skiing on the slopes and cross-country skiing, tobogganing and snow parks across the Villars-Gryon-Les Diablerets area. In summer, the railway carries walkers to the Col de Bretaye for a trail round four mountain lakes, and there are via ferratas and biking trails.
Yes. Gryon's sector joins the Villars side at La Rasse, and from Villars a chairlift continues to Les Diablerets. The shared Alpes Vaudoises pass covers about 225 km of pistes and 70 lifts.
You can. The Bex-Villars-Bretaye railway runs from Bex station through Gryon to the Col de Bretaye. From Geneva airport, trains reach Aigle every half hour, and the full journey to Gryon is close to three hours.
For active holidays, it is. The area offers hiking, via ferratas, biking trails and an 18-hole golf course at Villars, and the railway takes walkers up to the Col de Bretaye for a circuit of four mountain lakes.
From La Barboleuse. The gondola to Les Chaux starts there, at the heart of the resort, some way from the old village centre. A long chairlift from Sodoleuvre climbs to the top of the Gryon sector.
