Alpe des Chaux suits couples and small families who want to ski from a quiet perch at about 1,800 m above Gryon. The slopes link into the Villars-Gryon area and there are views to the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc. Homes are small, sleeping up to six, and evenings are very quiet.
Alpe des Chaux is a high part of the commune of Gryon, linked to the village by a gondola since 1956. Les Chaux sits on the Gryon side of the Villars-Gryon ski area, which is smaller and a little lower than the Villars side, with a top point of 1,987 m. The old four-seat gondola climbs from La Barboleuse. Restaurant des Chaux, next to the slopes and the Gryon ski school, has a terrace facing the Dents du Midi and Mont Blanc. The homes are grouped closely together up here, so this is a base for the slopes rather than a village. Gryon itself sits lower down on a narrow terrace at about 1,110 m.

An alpine pasture in the west of Gryon commune, also heritage-listed, reached from Les Chaux on a winter hike of about an hour and a half there and back.
The larger resort across the shared ski area, whose Col de Bretaye sector is reached by the Bex-Villars-Bretaye railway.
Fly to Geneva: the drive to Gryon takes around an hour and fifty minutes. Trains run from Geneva airport to Aigle or Bex for the climb up to Gryon. A car makes the last stretch easier.
Winter is the main season, when the Gryon lifts connect with Villars, which links to Les Diablerets by a chairlift that replaced the old one in 2017. Winter hiking trails run from Les Chaux to Taveyanne and to La Barboleuse. Outside the ski season, check which lifts and restaurants are running before you book.
Yes. Les Chaux is on the Gryon side of the linked Villars-Gryon area; a blue run drops to La Rasse, where a short T-bar heads back towards Gryon, and the lifts connect across to Villars.
It can be. The Gryon ski school sits beside the slopes at Les Chaux, and the Gryon sector is smaller than the Villars side, with a maximum drop of nearly 750 m against about 835 m.
Wide open. From the terrace of Restaurant des Chaux at about 1,800 m you look straight across to the Dents du Midi and on a clear day to Mont Blanc.
Small ones only. Homes here have around two bedrooms and sleep up to six, so check each listing for a fireplace or outdoor space.
