Playa San Juan suits couples and families who want a pool on Tenerife's quieter west coast, 7 km from the Los Gigantes marina. Most homes are up in the hills around Chío rather than by the sea, so you will drive down to the dark-sand beach and the harbour.
Playa San Juan is a fishing port of about 7,700 people at the mouth of the Barranco de San Juan, roughly 10 km below Guía de Isora's main town. A cliff shelters the bay from westerly winds, and the town beach is 360 metres of dark sand with calm water, sunbeds and a children's play area. Abama counts as part of the same locality. Our homes mostly sit higher up, around Chío, a farming village at about 680 metres in Guía de Isora, which buys space and views at the cost of a drive for dinner. Every home has a pool; most sleep two to four, a few take bigger groups, and none lists air conditioning.
Marina about 7 km up the coast below the Acantilados de Los Gigantes, with whale-watching trips and a small dark-sand beach.
Resort lying just south of Los Gigantes alongside Puerto de Santiago, easy to pair with a day at the marina.
Teno village at about 750 metres; the Barranco de Masca walk is almost 10 km there and back, about six hours, and must be booked.
Spain's highest peak at 3,718 metres; a cable car goes up the volcano, and walking to the crater needs a permit.
Tenerife South airport is about 36 km away, under half an hour to Playa San Juan by car, plus the climb to homes inland. Buses change at Costa Adeje and take about an hour and twenty minutes to Fonsalía. Hire a car: most homes are up the hill.
Tenerife is mild enough for summer clothes all year, and the town beach is usually calm with gentle winds, so there is no bad month for a pool holiday here. Winter suits walkers heading for Masca or Teide; the Masca barranco needs advance booking and the Teide crater a permit. Homes have no air conditioning, so the pool matters most in high summer.
Dark sand. The town beach runs 360 metres beside the harbour, with calm water, sunbed rental, showers and a play area for children. Occupancy is rated low, and a cliff shelters the bay from westerly winds.
Mostly not. The homes listed under Playa San Juan are largely up in the hills around Chío, a farming village at about 680 metres, so expect to drive down. In return, every one has a pool.
About 36 km, or just under half an hour by car. By bus you change at Costa Adeje, and the journey takes around an hour and twenty minutes, which is hard going with luggage.
Pick Los Gigantes for the cliffs, the marina and whale-watching boats. Playa San Juan, 7 km down the coast, is a smaller fishing port with a calm beach sheltered by a cliff, and every home listed here has a pool.
Not on foot from town. Go to Santiago del Teide, the departure point for buses and taxis to Masca, because arriving by public transport is mandatory. Book the walk, almost 10 km and around six hours, online in advance.
