About Cala d'Or
Cala d'Or is a resort village on Mallorca's east coast, in the municipality of Santanyí. Its story starts in 1932 with Josep Costa Ferrer, an architect from Ibiza, and the buildings are small and cubic in Ibizan style, mostly painted white. The coves run roughly east to west: Cala Esmeralda, Cala Gran, Cala d'Or itself and Cala Llonga, where the 563-berth marina sits. Cala Egos is the western end of the resort. The homes spread several kilometres around it, and nearly all have a private pool and a garden. Most sleep around six, and a good number sleep more than eight, which suits groups travelling together.

Palma airport is about 60 km away, and journey planners give around 45 minutes by car. London flights serve Palma on British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, TUI and Ryanair. The bus takes close to two hours with a change, so a car is the practical choice for villas outside the centre.

Jet2 and TUI fly from London to Palma only in the summer schedule, while easyJet from Gatwick, Luton and Southend, British Airways from Gatwick and London City, and Ryanair from Stansted run all year. Outside summer there are fewer direct options, so check that restaurants near your villa are open before you book.

Cala d'Or villa holidays: questions answered
Does Cala d'Or have a sandy beach?
It has several coves rather than one long beach. From east to west they are Cala Esmeralda, Cala Gran, Cala d'Or itself and Cala Llonga, with more coves around Cala Egos, the resort's western area. Check each cove's size and facilities if you plan to spend whole days on the sand.
Why is Cala d'Or all white buildings?
It goes back to Josep Costa Ferrer, an artist and architect from Ibiza who began work here in 1932. The buildings are small and cubic in Ibizan style, and most are painted white in the Mediterranean tradition. It was one of the first major tourist resorts in Mallorca.
How far is Cala d'Or from Mondragó?
The Mondragó protected area is nearby, with s'Amarador about 5 km south-west of Cala d'Or. It is a short drive, and most villas here are spread several kilometres around the resort, so distances vary by home.
Is Cala d'Or a good place for a group villa?
Yes, more than most Mallorcan towns. Nearly all the homes here have a private pool and a garden, most sleep around six, and a good number sleep more than eight. The marina and coves are close for day trips from the house.
Where is the marina at Cala d'Or?
In Cala Llonga, one of the resort's coves. The marina has 563 berths over about 30,000 square metres, so it is a sizeable harbour rather than a small jetty.
