Válor suits walkers and families wanting a private pool and a log fire in a quiet Alpujarras village at around 900 metres. Every home here has a garden, a pool and a fireplace. The catch is distance: Granada is about an hour and a half by car, and buses run only to Granada and Ugíjar.
Válor is a village of fewer than 700 people on the southern slope of the Sierra Nevada, at around 900 metres, close to Yegen, where Gerald Brenan lived in the 1920s. Its history runs deep: Bronze Age and Roman remains, a silk-producing centre under Islamic rule, and the 16th-century house linked to Abén Humeya, who led the Alpujarras revolt of 1568 to 1570. The 16th-century church of San José stands on its square, and the Puente de la Tableta crosses the Válor river. Walking is the main activity, on routes such as the circular Sendero de los Castaños and paths that join stages of the GR-7. Every home has a fireplace for cooler evenings.
The nearby village where the writer Gerald Brenan lived in the 1920s, reached from Válor on a marked path that follows stage 13 of the GR-7.
Its church of the Virgen de la Antigua was begun in 1504, and the Sendero del Agua walking route links it with Válor.
On the Sendero del Agua with Válor and Nechite, it has a church of San Antón built at the end of the 15th century.
Granada is about an hour and a half by car, while ALSA buses from Granada's bus station take over three hours. Málaga, Almería and Granada-Jaén are the airports to consider. A hire car is essential here.
Mid-September is Válor's big moment: on 14 September the Santo Cristo de la Yedra is carried through the streets, and on the 15th the Moors and Christians play is staged in the main square. Book early if you want to be there for both days.
On 15 September. It is performed in the main square beside the church, with foot soldiers firing blanks from shotguns and flintlocks, and follows the procession of the Santo Cristo de la Yedra on the 14th. The script dates from the 1860s.
Plenty. Marked routes include the circular Sendero de los Castaños, the Sendero de la Launa to Fuente Bajona, the Sendero del Agua through Nechite and Mecina Alfahar, and a path to Yegen along stage 13 of the GR-7.
Only slowly. Buses link Válor with Granada and Ugíjar, but the trip from Granada takes over three hours, against about an hour and a half by car. A hire car is the sensible choice.
For outdoorsy ones, yes. Every home here has a garden and a private pool, and several sleep eight or more, which suits bigger groups. Children who need a beach or theme park nearby will find it quiet.
