Torrox is a white hill village in the Axarquía, 4 km inland from its beach resort and about 50 minutes from Málaga airport. It suits a pool-and-garden base, though the coastal strip below gets busy with holidaymakers in summer.
This page covers Torrox and the Axarquía, the hill country in the east of Málaga province. Torrox village is a sizeable white-walled place built up a steep slope around the Plaza de la Constitución, and it grew rich in Moorish times from the silk trade. Our homes spread about 5 km around Torrox, nearly all with a private pool and most with a garden; they mostly sleep two to four, and a few sleep up to ten. The Axarquía behind has terraced valleys, olives, almonds and vines, plus mango and kiwi where the climate allows. Torrox is less visited than Frigiliana, so expect fewer crowds in the village.
The modern coastal resort about 4 km below the village, with hotels and the remains of a Roman villa and necropolis beside its lighthouse.
Often named among the prettiest villages in Andalucía, and busier with visitors than Torrox.
A hilltop village and popular walking base, with a wine museum for tasting the local sweet wine.
The capital of the Axarquía, a few kilometres inland from Torre del Mar, with a hilltop Muslim castle above it.
Málaga airport is about 57 km away and takes around 50 minutes by car. An ALSA bus runs from Málaga to Torrox, but only twice a day. For villages and trailheads in the hills, you need a car.
A pool matters in July and August, and the coast is busiest then because Torrox Costa is popular with holidaymakers in summer. The sub-tropical climate grows crops such as mango and kiwi. Walking holidays based in Cómpeta are run by several UK companies, and the hills suit exploring outside midsummer.
No. Torrox is the inland village, about 4 km from Torrox Costa, the coastal strip and resort. The village has a historic centre on a hill, while the coast has the hotels and seafront.
It is the inland area in the east of Málaga province, about half an hour from the coast, with Vélez-Málaga as its capital. Its natural parks include the Tejeda and Almijara sierras, and Lake Viñuela is another beauty spot.
Yes, for a quiet look at a hillside white village. Its centre has bright white-walled houses climbing a steep slope, and the main square is the Plaza de la Constitución. It has fewer visitors than Frigiliana.
Yes. Several UK companies run walking holidays from Cómpeta, and the deep valleys are lined with terraces and irrigation channels dating from Muslim times. Horse trekking is also popular here.
Torrox is less visited and so quieter. Frigiliana is named by many as one of the prettiest villages in Andalucía and draws more day visitors, so pick it for atmosphere over calm.
