Mutxamel suits families wanting a house with a private pool in the hills behind Alicante, about 20 minutes from the airport. There are only a handful of homes, out in the countryside north-west of the town, so every beach trip is a drive.
Mutxamel is a historically agricultural town of around 28,600 people, about 10 km from central Alicante, that has grown into part of the Alicante metropolitan area. Most of the municipality is flat, with small sierras to the west. The centre is built around the church of El Salvador, begun in 1511, whose Gothic bell tower was raised to warn of pirate raids. Our homes are not in the centre but in the hills north-west of town, towards Jijona. There is no beach. Evenings are low-key, except in September, when Moros y Cristianos takes over.
Beaches about 8 minutes by road from Mutxamel town, with a 16th-century lookout tower above the harbour.
About 15 minutes' drive away, the home of soft Jijona nougat, sold mostly around Christmas and the New Year.
About 10 km away, with Santa Bárbara Castle on Mount Benacantil, reached by lifts inside the rock.
Alicante Airport is about 23 km from Mutxamel, roughly 20 minutes by car, and the homes are a little further out. Buses run between Alicante and the town, but you need a car for shops and beaches.
It has none of its own. The beaches at El Campello are about 8 minutes by road from the town, and further from the homes in the hills.
From 7 to 13 September, in honour of the patron, the Virgen de Loreto. Around 5,000 people take part in a festival held since the late 19th century, so the town centre is at its busiest that week.
Yes, but only in one house. One home sleeps a large party, the others suit four or so, and all have a private pool.
