Villas in Caminha suit families and walkers wanting wide Atlantic beaches and an old town on the Minho, with Spain across the river. The beaches can be windy, and private pools are rare.
Caminha is a small town on the southern bank of the Minho estuary, about 2 km from the Atlantic, with Galicia on the far shore. You enter the old centre through the Torre do Relógio, the clock tower, onto Rua Direita, where the bars and cafés are. The main square has a Renaissance fountain of 1551, and the parish church shows the shift from Gothic to Renaissance with Manueline touches. Marshes along the Coura river are protected and good for birds. The homes are spread around the town, mostly small, sleeping around five, and just over half have a garden, but a private pool is rare.
About 21 km south of Caminha, and the town that eventually overtook it in maritime trade along the northern Portuguese coast.
About 4 km south-west of the town, a wide Atlantic beach popular with surfers.
The range in the south of the municipality rises to 825 m and holds the Romanesque monastery of São João d'Arga.
Porto airport is about 91 km from Caminha. The Minho Line train runs from Porto to Valença with stations at Caminha, and the A28 motorway follows the coast. Homes are spread around the town and beaches lie a few kilometres off, so a car is the easier way to get about.
Beaches are wide but can be windy, and the sea stays cool even in summer, so this is as much a walking and sightseeing base as a swimming one. The Minho and Coura estuaries draw many birds in winter. The monastery of São João d'Arga holds a pilgrimage each year on 28 and 29 August.
Sand. The beach at the river mouth has fine sand on the open-sea side and thicker sand by the river, and the Atlantic beaches nearby are wide with good sand, though they tend to be windy for part of the day.
On the river side of the Foz do Minho beach, yes: the water is calm there. The open-sea side is rougher, and the Atlantic stays cool in summer.
Yes, a weekly market is held on Wednesdays. The town is also known for its copper handiwork and lace.
