Arcos de Valdevez suits walkers wanting a quiet base in the Alto Minho, with mountain parishes inside Portugal's only national park. Expect rain: the park sees more than 130 rainy days a year, and a car is needed for most trailheads and villages.
Arcos de Valdevez is the seat of a municipality in the far north of Portugal, bordered to the east by Spanish Galicia. It is the largest municipality by area in Viana do Castelo district. The Vez and Lima rivers occupy a valley through it, with mountain country to the west and east rising to 1,416 metres at the highest point. A four-arched stone bridge over the Vez was built between 1876 and 1880. Homes are scattered over a wide area rather than clustered; most sleep two to four, many have a private pool, and most have a garden and a fireplace.
Portugal's only national park, created in 1971, with granite massifs, steep valleys, fast streams and waterfalls; mountain parishes of the municipality lie inside it.
An eighteenth-century church in the mountains, approached by a stairway of 300 metres with 20 chapels.
A viewpoint at Porta do Cova looking over a tiny mountain village and the greenery around it.
A medieval palace in Giela, a national monument since 1910; opening hours change by season and it is closed on Mondays.
Porto Airport is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Arcos de Valdevez by car, and a bus from the town's bus terminal reaches the airport in around 1 hour 45 minutes. The IC28 connects the town with the A3 and A27 motorways, and a car is needed for the scattered homes and mountain villages.
Yes. Mountain parishes of the municipality, including Soajo and Sistelo, lie inside the park, and the area serves as a gateway to it. The park covers around 700 square kilometres of granite uplands, with Gerês, the highest peak, at about 1,545 metres.
Wet, especially uphill. The park sees more than 130 rainy days a year, with around 1,600 mm of rain at lower levels and up to 3,200 mm at higher ones. River valleys are warmer than the highlands, so pack waterproofs in every season.
About 90 km from the city, and Porto Airport is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes away by car. Braga is much nearer, about 36 km from the town.
Plenty. The municipality has a pillory erected in 1515, the Iron Age hillfort of Castro de Ázere, inhabited from the eighth century BC, and dolmens on the Serra do Soajo, alongside the Romanesque monastery at Ermelo.
