Ferragudo is a small fishing village on the western bank of the Arade river estuary, directly opposite Portimao but a world away in atmosphere. While Portimao is a busy town with high-rise hotels, Ferragudo is low-rise, whitewashed, and quiet. The village climbs a gentle hill above a small harbour, with narrow lanes, a castle ruin, and a beach (Praia Grande) that's one of the most sheltered on the western Algarve. We think it's one of the best-kept practical secrets on this coast: close to everything, but calm enough to feel like a proper holiday.
Why Stay in Ferragudo
- Village atmosphere — cobbled lanes, a daily fish market, and restaurants where the catch goes from boat to plate the same day. It feels like the Algarve before mass tourism.
- Sheltered beach — Praia Grande faces the river estuary, so it's calmer than the open Atlantic beaches. Good for families and nervous swimmers.
- Central location, Portimao (5 minutes by car), Carvoeiro (10 minutes), Silves (15 minutes), and the big Algarve beaches are all close.
- Honest caveat. Ferragudo is small. Restaurant choice is limited (maybe eight to ten places), and there's only one proper beach. Evening entertainment is a glass of wine on the terrace, which is either perfect or boring depending on your temperament.
Things to Do in Ferragudo
Walk down to the harbour in the morning to see the day's catch being unloaded. The small fish market sells fresh fish at good prices. Above the harbour, the Castelo de Sao Joao do Arade (usually closed to the public but impressive from outside) guards the river mouth.
Praia Grande is the main beach: a wide stretch of sand sheltered by cliffs on one side and the river on the other. It's particularly good for families because the water is calmer than the open-coast beaches. A couple of beach restaurants serve seafood and cold drinks.
Walk east along the clifftop path towards Carvoeiro for coastal views, or take a boat trip from the harbour to explore the sea caves and rock formations of the Benagil coast. The famous Benagil cave (about 15 minutes by boat) is the highlight.
Silves, the former Moorish capital of the Algarve, is 15 minutes inland. Its red sandstone castle and riverside setting make for a pleasant half-day trip. The Arade river is also good for kayaking, with rental available at several points.
