Santiago do Cacém suits couples wanting a quiet Alentejo base with a Moorish castle, Roman ruins and the Santo André lagoon within reach. Most homes here have a private pool, but they are small, sleeping no more than five.
Santiago do Cacém is a city in the Alentejo Litoral, the seat of a large, thinly populated municipality whose Santo André parish takes in the lagoon and the beaches. Its castle was built by the Moors, and the knights of the Order of Santiago were later left to rebuild its defences; ten square towers reinforce the walls, and the old church of Santiago is built into them. About a kilometre north-west of the centre, on Castelo Velho hill, lie the ruins of Roman Miróbriga. The homes are grouped together outside the town, all small, for two to five people.
Roman ruins with a forum, temples, two side-by-side bath houses among the best preserved in Portugal, and the only circus in the country whose full plan is known.
The biggest lagoon system on the Alentejo coast, inside a nature reserve that protects water birds and has otter shelters.
A windsurfing beach on the Santo André coast, part of a protected area with walking trails through the dunes.
Fly to Lisbon; the drive to Santiago do Cacém takes about an hour and a half. Buses run via Setúbal, changing to bus 86, in around three and a half hours. Hire a car: the homes, the coast and the lagoon are spread out.
The castle and Miróbriga are the two big sights. The castle has ten square towers and a church of Santiago with Romanesque and Gothic features in its wall, and the Roman ruins have an interpretation centre at the entrance.
Only once a year. The lagoon used to connect to the sea but is now kept closed, and the link to the ocean is opened by hand each spring. It sits inside a nature reserve for water birds.
The municipal holiday falls on 25 July, Saint James's day, and is kept every year across the municipality.
Most homes here have a private pool and a garden, though they are small, typically one or two bedrooms. Check each listing for exact facilities.
