Locorotondo suits couples wanting a walkable white hill town in the Valle d'Itria, with trulli country and local white wine on the doorstep. Choice is very small here, and homes sleep two to four. The sea is a drive away.
Locorotondo is a hill town of around fourteen thousand people at about 410 metres, between Martina Franca and Alberobello in the Valle d'Itria. The old centre is a ring of narrow lanes, easy to walk, lined with cummerse: small white houses with steep pointed roofs. A circular promenade runs round the edge, and from Via Nardelli the view across the valley is best at sunset. The Templars' Staircase drops from there through vineyards. Only a handful of homes are listed, close to the town. The local DOC white wine, still or sparkling, carries the town's name.
The best-known trulli town, its historic centre a UNESCO World Heritage Site with around 1,500 of the conical houses.
Hilltop town known for its sunset views and for butcher's shops that grill your meat while you watch.
Bari airport is about 75 km away by road, around 1 hour 10 minutes by car. Brindisi is the other choice. Public transport from either airport takes hours, so hire a car.
The old town is: its small white streets and alleys are compact and easy to explore on foot, with a promenade round the rim. For beaches, other trulli towns and supermarkets you will need a car.
It is a DOC white wine named after the town, made in still and sparkling styles, mainly from the Verdeca and Bianco d'Alessano grapes.
Locorotondo has the circular old town, the cummerse and the valley views. Alberobello has the famous concentration of trulli in its UNESCO-listed centre, and makes a good day out from a quieter base.
