Sorano suits couples who want a tufa hill town in southern Tuscany, with Etruscan tombs and sunken roads close by. The homes are scattered widely around Sorano, mostly one-bedroom places for four, and most listings show a pool and garden; check each one. You need a car: Pisa is around two and a half hours away.
Sorano is a medieval hill town in southern Tuscany, built on a high tufa rock that resembles a natural cliff. The Orsini fortress, built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 16th, now houses a museum of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. On the opposite side of town, the Masso Leopoldino looks back over the fortress and the whole village. The old Jewish ghetto is still there, with a synagogue and an unleavened bread oven on record, though the community left in the early 20th century. The homes are not concentrated in the village: they are spread across the surrounding countryside, some a long way out, so check each location on the map.
Close to Sorano, with 2,500-year-old Etruscan tombs including the Tomba Ildebranda, and the Via Cava del Cavone, a sunken path cut through the tufa.
Known as Little Jerusalem after the Jewish community that settled there in the 15th century; the synagogue dates from 1598, and an open-air museum covers Etruscan necropolises.
About half an hour by car from Pitigliano, the springs are free to use and open all year.
Grosseto airport is about 53 km away, Rome Fiumicino about 108 km and Florence about 130 km. From Pisa the drive takes around two and a half hours. Hire a car: the bus from Siena takes about three hours to Pitigliano, and Sorano is a further 12 minutes on the 18P.
Sunken pathways cut through the tufa. The Via Cava del Cavone at Sovana is one of the best known, and the Città del Tufo archaeological park, entered through the visitor centre in Sovana, also takes in the Tomba Ildebranda and the Siren's Tomb.
Two options. Terme di Sorano is about six minutes by car from the village, and the free Saturnia hot springs, open all year, are around half an hour's drive from Pitigliano.
Either works for the tufa villages. Pitigliano has the 1598 synagogue of Little Jerusalem and an open-air Etruscan museum; Sorano has the Orsini fortress museum, the Masso Leopoldino viewpoint and its own former Jewish ghetto.
