Our Primavalle homes are in fact in Aurelio, next door, a residential quarter bordering Vatican City that suits families wanting space. Homes sleep four to six on the whole. You give up old-centre atmosphere: the piazzas across the Tiber mean a bus or metro ride.
Aurelio takes its name from the Via Aurelia and is one of Rome's first fifteen quarters, marked out in 1911. It borders Vatican City to the north, with the Leonine walls separating it from Borgo, and many streets are named after popes and cardinals. This is a lived-in district of about 40,000 people, with neighbourhood churches such as San Gregorio VII and San Pio V rather than headline sights. Metro line A runs out this way towards Battistini, the terminus serving Primavalle, with Cornelia and Baldo degli Ubaldi among the stations on that stretch. Primavalle proper, a borgata built in the late 1930s, is the neighbouring quarter to the west. The homes mostly have two bedrooms, and none has a pool or garden.
Over the Vatican wall from Aurelio; on metro line A, Ottaviano station carries St Peter's and the Vatican Museums in its full name.
Hadrian's mausoleum, in Borgo just beyond the Leonine walls that edge Aurelio, and a landmark of Prati, whose coat of arms shows its outline.
A 40-hectare protected natural area on the Primavalle side, set up as a regional park in 1987.
A 249-hectare nature reserve shared by Primavalle and Casalotti, established in 1997, for green space on the city's edge.
Fly to Rome Fiumicino. Trains run from the airport to Termini, where metro line A heads out past Ottaviano to Cornelia and Baldo degli Ubaldi. A taxi is simpler with luggage. A car is more trouble than help for city sightseeing.
In Aurelio, the neighbouring quarter. Although they are listed under Primavalle, the homes sit in Aurelio, which borders Vatican City and has streets named after popes and cardinals.
It depends what you want. Primavalle proper is a semi-peripheral suburb, built as a 1930s borgata, with parks rather than sights. Aurelio, where these homes are, borders the Vatican itself.
Take metro line A. Battistini, the end of the line, serves Primavalle, and the same line runs through Cornelia and Baldo degli Ubaldi to Ottaviano, whose full name includes St Peter's and the Vatican Museums.
For families happy with a residential base, yes. Homes here mostly have two bedrooms and sleep four to six, though none has outdoor space. Check each listing for air conditioning, lifts and stairs.
