Macugnaga suits walkers and winter visitors wanting a Walser mountain village under the east face of Monte Rosa. No home has a pool or air conditioning, so this is a mountain stay.
Macugnaga is a mountain village at 1,327 m in the Valle Anzasca, at the foot of Monte Rosa and its east face. It is a small village spread over many hamlets, with Staffa as the municipal seat. Walser people from the Swiss Valais settled the valley in the Middle Ages, and the Dorf area keeps traditional larch-wood houses, while the Walser Museum is in the hamlet of Borca. A cableway runs from the central square towards the Passo del Monte Moro on the Swiss border. All the homes stand together in the village, nearly all with a garden, none with a pool or air conditioning. Out of season the village is very quiet.
Reached by cableway from the central square, at about 3,000 m on the Swiss border.
Hamlet of Macugnaga that holds the Walser Museum.
One of the small alpine lakes that forms only in summer as the snow melts.
Fly to Milan Malpensa, about an hour and a half away by road. Buses with a change at Villadossola reach Macugnaga in a little over three hours, but a hire car is easier for the hamlets and winter conditions.
Winter brings snow and slopes for skiers, freeriders and ski mountaineers, and fireplaces are rare in the homes, so check heating. Summer brings green forests and small alpine lakes, some of which form only as snow melts. No home has air conditioning or a pool, which is fine at this height. Check lift and museum opening times for the season you choose.

Yes for walking. Summer brings green forests and small alpine lakes, some of which form only as the snow melts, and the Mountain Museum is also worth a stop.
