Capalbio suits families and couples who want a private pool in southern Tuscany, with the Chiarone and Macchiatonda beaches nearby. The homes are outside the walled hilltop village, so the old town, the beach and dinner out all mean short drives.
Capalbio is a small walled village on a scrub-covered hill near the Lazio border, about 45 km south-east of Grosseto and a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea. You can walk the full circuit of its walls, enter through the Porta Senese with its 15th-century wooden doors, and find the Rocca Aldobrandesca beside the church of San Nicola. It goes by the nickname Little Athens. The homes are outside the village, and most have a private pool. Nearby beaches include Chiarone, Macchiatonda and La Torba, and the Lake Burano reserve protects dunes and a salt lake.
Niki de Saint Phalle's sculpture garden at Garavicchio in the comune of Capalbio, with 22 monumental sculptures, open to the public since 1998.
WWF reserve of 410 hectares with dunes, scrub and a salt lake; visits are guided only and follow a flat 2 km path.
A few kilometres from Capalbio, with the villages of Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole and Orbetello, known for fishing and local traditions.
Rome Fiumicino is the obvious airport for Capalbio, about an hour and 25 minutes' drive away. Capalbio has a railway station with trains from Rome, but the homes are outside the village, so hire a car at the airport.
Summer is the beach season, and the Capalbio Cinema short film festival takes place in the first half of July. Spring and autumn are quieter, and Lake Burano is good for birdwatching at different times of year.
Chiarone, Macchiatonda and La Torba are the nearby beaches. The village itself is a few kilometres inland, so you will need a car for beach days.
Yes. Niki de Saint Phalle's Tarot Garden is at Garavicchio, in the comune of Capalbio, between the hills and the sea. It holds 22 monumental sculptures, standing 12 to 15 metres high.
Only with a guide. The WWF reserve covers 410 hectares of dunes, scrub and salt lake, and visits last about two hours along a flat 2 km path, with around 274 bird species recorded.
