Barga is a hilltop town in the Serchio Valley, about 35 km north of Lucca. It has a medieval old quarter, a Romanesque cathedral with mountain views, and a surprisingly active cultural life for a place of its size. The town has a long connection with the Scottish-Italian community, and you'll find a mix of Italian locals, British expats, and summer visitors. We rate it as a strong alternative to the more crowded Lucca if you want a quieter, cooler base with genuine Tuscan character.
Why Stay in Barga
- Cooler summer temperatures — the hill position and proximity to the Apuan Alps mean Barga is noticeably cooler than the lowland cities during July and August.
- Walkable old town — restaurants, cafés, and shops are clustered within a compact medieval centre you can explore on foot in an afternoon.
- Good cultural scene, a jazz festival in August, an opera festival in July, and regular events through the summer months give the town a livelier feel than its size suggests.
- Honest caveat. Barga is inland with no coast nearby (the beach is 45 minutes to an hour away). If you want daily beach access, this isn't the right base.
Things to Do in Barga
Start at the Duomo di San Cristoforo, Barga's cathedral at the highest point of the old town. The façade is plain Romanesque limestone, but the terrace behind the church opens up a panorama of the Apuan Alps that catches most visitors off guard. It's free to visit and rarely crowded.
The old town's narrow lanes have a handful of independent shops, a good bookshop, and several restaurants. Thursday is market day in the lower town, with food stalls and local produce worth browsing.
For outdoor activity, the Orrido di Botri gorge is about 40 minutes south and offers a dramatic guided walk through a limestone canyon (booking required, summer only). The Apuan Alps are within easy reach for more serious hiking, with trails ranging from gentle valley walks to full-day ridge routes.
Lucca is 40 minutes by car and makes a comfortable day trip for its city walls, Puccini connections, and better shopping. The Cinque Terre coast is about 90 minutes west if you want a beach day, though the drive is winding.
