Pignone is a small village of medieval layout on the route linking the Vara valley to the Cinque Terre in Liguria. Nearly all homes here have a private pool and a garden, which suits families and groups; the catch is that beach days mean leaving the village.
Pignone began as a pre-Roman trading settlement, and the centre still keeps much of its medieval street plan. Piazza Marconi, the former cattle market, looks onto a 14th-century loggia, and the 14th-century parish church holds paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The hamlet of Casale has a two-arch bridge and the ruins of old fortifications. Around the village the ground is karst, with caves and sinkholes beside old mule tracks. The homes sit close together and are mostly small, nearly all with a pool and a garden.
One of the five Cinque Terre villages, built around a small port used since Roman times, with a Gothic church and Doria Castle.
Cinque Terre village with the soft, sandy Fegina beach and a literary park dedicated to the poet Eugenio Montale.
Part of the same UNESCO site as the Cinque Terre, with brightly coloured houses, a marina and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto.
Pisa Airport to La Spezia is about 56 minutes by car, roughly 80 km. From Pignone, a taxi into the Cinque Terre via Vernazza takes about 25 minutes. A car is the practical choice here, both for the coast and for the Cinque Terre trailheads.
Fairly. Pignone sits on the route linking the Vara valley to the Cinque Terre, and the road trip via Vernazza takes about 25 minutes. It is a valley village, though, not a coastal one, so you travel to the five villages.
No. Pignone is a village beside a river, not a seaside resort. The sandy Fegina beach is at Monterosso al Mare in the Cinque Terre, which is where most beach days will be.
Not directly. The Cinque Terre has more than 120 km of trails, and the best known, the Sentiero Azzurro, links the five villages in four sections from Riomaggiore to Monterosso al Mare. You travel to a trailhead first.
The Pignone potato, plus several varieties of beans. The beans can be bought and tasted at Gli orti di Pignone, a food and wine festival held in August.
