Ameglia suits families and walkers who want a medieval hill village by the Magra river mouth, with beaches at Bocca di Magra below. There is little nightlife and few homes have a pool or air conditioning, so this is a beach and walking base rather than a lively resort.
Ameglia is a medieval hilltop village with a modern town grown up below it, in a municipality of about 4,300 people in the province of La Spezia, close to the Tuscan border. The old upper village is pedestrianised and has a castle. The municipality runs down to the sea at Bocca di Magra and Fiumaretta, where the Magra meets the sea and a marina takes small and medium boats. The beaches there mix sand with rounded river pebbles, with rocky shore nearby. Montemarcello sits on the Caprione headland. For nightlife, people head to Versilia, about half an hour away by motorway. The homes are in and around Ameglia, most with a garden and room for four to six.
A colourful village on the Caprione promontory, with the botanical garden and the steep path of about 700 steps down to Punta Corvo.
The historic resort on the eastern side of the Gulf of Poets, with a 12th-century castle and a free lift up from the harbour.
A fishing village east of Lerici with a small harbour and colourful houses above it, quiet even when the coast is busy.
Pisa airport is about 55 km away, and the drive from Pisa to Ameglia takes around 50 minutes. Trains stop at Sarzana, about 10 km from Bocca di Magra, and a bus runs on towards Ameglia. A car is useful, but park outside the limited-traffic centre at Bocca di Magra.
High season brings crowds to Bocca di Magra, and car parks can fill during summer events. Blue-line parking is paid in July and August and on holiday weekends in June and September. Summer is also when ferries run to Punta Corvo and river trips go up the Magra.
Both. The beaches at Bocca di Magra mix sand with rounded river pebbles, with one equipped beach and one free beach, and rocky shore close by. Punta Corvo, reached by steps or by boat, is another option.
On foot from Montemarcello, down a steep path of about 700 natural steps, or by ferry in summer from Bocca di Magra or Fiumaretta. Take water and decent shoes for the climb back.
Partly. Trains run to Sarzana, about 10 km from Bocca di Magra, with buses towards Ameglia, and boats link Bocca di Magra with the Gulf of Poets villages. A car still helps for supermarket runs and day trips.
Pick Ameglia for a hill village by the river mouth with beaches at Bocca di Magra. Lerici is a historic resort on the Gulf of Poets with a castle and harbour, and parking there is hard and expensive.
