San Siro is a small municipality on the west shore of Lake Como, just north of Menaggio, with compact homes mostly for two to four people. Few have a private pool, so check the listing if swimming matters.
San Siro is not one village. The municipality was created in 2003 by merging Sant'Abbondio and Santa Maria Rezzonico, and its core is the pair of Santa Maria and Rezzonico, with Menaggio to the south and Cremia to the north. Rezzonico sits on a rocky promontory under a 14th-century castle built by the Della Torre family, and the 15th-century church of Santa Maria Assunta stands on the lakeshore. Cobbled paths link fountains, chapels and small churches. Homes are tightly grouped and mostly small, with gardens on some. Evenings are quiet, and the larger lake towns are a drive or a ferry away. Check what is open before an off-season visit.
The next town south, and the place to catch the ferry across the lake to Bellagio.
Across the water from Menaggio, where the ferry crossing takes about 11 minutes.
On the far side of the lake from San Siro, in the Province of Lecco rather than Como.
From Milan Malpensa, the drive to Menaggio, next door to San Siro, takes around an hour and a quarter. The municipality takes in eighteen listed hamlets, so a car makes moving between them and the shore far easier.
On the west shore, just north of Menaggio and south of Cremia. The municipality dates from 2003, and its main settlements are Santa Maria and Rezzonico, with a string of smaller hamlets such as Acquaseria and Noledo.
Choose Menaggio if you want the ferry pier, as the boat to Bellagio leaves from there. San Siro suits a quieter base with a castle-topped promontory at Rezzonico, and you can still reach Menaggio by road.
The 14th-century Rezzonico castle, built by the Della Torre family, and the lakeshore church of Santa Maria Assunta, built between 1464 and 1474 for Dominican friars. Villa Gaeta, designed in 1920 by the Coppedè studio, is also in the municipality.
Not many do. Most homes here are small places for two to four people, and private pools are uncommon, so filter for a pool if you need one. Some have a garden.
