Musso suits couples and small families who want a quiet village on the upper west shore of Lake Como. Homes here are small, sleeping two to five, close together, and none has a pool. The west shore road still runs through the middle of many villages, so day trips to the central lake take time.
Musso is a small comune of under a thousand people on the west shore of the lake's northern branch, between Dongo and Pianello del Lario, with Colico across the water. Above the houses rises the Sasso di Musso, a rock over the lake where Gian Giacomo Medici, the Medeghino, fortified a castle and ruled much of the lake until his defeat in 1532. The ruins sit near the 17th-century church of Sant'Eufemia, and the Giardino del Merlo, a 19th-century garden of grottoes, tunnels and exotic plants, lies on the border with Dongo. Evenings are a meal at Trattoria Il Pontile. Most homes have a garden.
The next village north along the shore, with a market once a week.
Musso's neighbour to the south, a string of lakeside hamlets with Pizzeria Laguna Beach for a casual evening.
Villages further north on the upper lake, each worth a stop of an hour or two.
Across the lake at the top, with views over the top of the lake, a First World War fort open one day a week and a railway station.
Milan Malpensa is around an hour and a half by car. Without a car, a train to Lugano and bus 631 to neighbouring Dongo takes under four hours. Boats run the length of the lake from Como to Colico. Driving is easiest.
It is the rock above Musso where Gian Giacomo Medici, the Medeghino, fortified a castle in the 16th century. It was destroyed in 1532, and its ruins stand near the church of Sant'Eufemia.
For small ones, yes. Homes sleep up to five and most have a garden, though none has a pool. The Giardino del Merlo, with its grottoes and tunnels, makes an easy outing.
About 96 km, roughly an hour and a half by car. Public transport works but is slow, via Lugano and a bus to Dongo next door.
Dongo, the next village north, holds a market once a week, which is the nearest one for stocking up.
