Vieste suits couples and small groups who want sandy beaches and a maze-like old town on the tip of the Gargano peninsula. Most homes are small. The cost of the setting is distance: Bari airport is around two and a half hours away by car.
Vieste is a seaside resort of about fourteen thousand people on the Gargano peninsula, inside the national park. Two large straight beaches lie beside the town, with the sea stack Pizzomunno standing on Castle Beach, and along the rest of the coast are gulfs with small sandy coves. The old town is a maze of narrow streets and stairways leading to the castle, the cathedral and Piazzetta Petrone, a belvedere over the sea. Trabucchi, the old wooden fishing structures that are the town's symbol, now serve as small restaurants. The homes are close together and mostly small, sleeping up to four, and a few have a private pool. Out of season, check which beach places and restaurants are open.

Bari airport is about 160 km away, around two and a half hours by car. Public transport takes most of a day with several changes, so hire a car at the airport. Allow extra time on day trips to Peschici or Mattinata.
Beach days belong to summer, when Vieste is a busy tourist hub. Outside summer the old town, cathedral and castle are still there to see, but check opening times for restaurants and beach places before you go. Each year the town holds a ceremony remembering the raid of 1554, when about 7,000 inhabitants were enslaved.
