The Valli del Natisone suit walkers and food-minded couples who want stone villages, Monte Matajur and Cividale close by. Homes sleep up to eight, and pools are rare here, so check each listing for a pool or fireplace. This is a country stay rather than a swimming holiday.
This is not one town but four narrow valleys, each with its own stream: the Natisone, Alberone, Cosizza and Erbezzo. They run up to the Slovenian border on the southern flank of the Julian Prealps, linking Cividale with the Isonzo valley. A few dozen very small villages of stone houses sit along them, some with 15th-century churches, and Slovene language and culture have survived here. The homes are spread across the villages rather than gathered in one place. Expect gorges, waterfalls and caves. Monte Matajur, at 1,641 metres, is the symbol of the area.
Starting point of Italy's UNESCO Lombard itinerary, with an 8th-century Lombard temple and an archaeological museum in a palace designed by Palladio.
A cave in the valleys tied by legend to the Lombard queen Teodolinda.
A village bordering Cividale, home to the Museum of Landscapes and Narratives and known in Slovene as Špeter Slovenov.
By car, San Pietro al Natisone is about an hour and a quarter from Trieste and under half an hour from Udine. Trains run from Udine to Cividale with a bus onwards, but for the smaller villages a car is far more practical.
Yes. The valleys are the main Slavic-speaking part of the Slavia friulana, and Slovene language and culture have survived in the villages.
Gubana is the one to try: a sweet bread filled with walnuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts and sultanas among many other ingredients, often served with local grappa or Colli Orientali del Friuli wine.
Very close. The valleys link Cividale del Friuli with the Isonzo valley, and San Pietro al Natisone shares a border with Cividale. Udine is about 20 km from San Pietro.
It is mainly walking country. Expect narrow wooded valleys, streams cutting through gorges, waterfalls and caves, with Monte Matajur rising above the area at 1,641 metres.
