Strassoldo suits couples and small families after a quiet walled hamlet with two castles on the Friulian plain, close to Aquileia and Grado. Most homes have a garden, none has a private pool, and the castles open only for two weekends a year.
Strassoldo is a hamlet of Cervignano del Friuli on the low Friulian plain, a medieval village of two castles, the Castello di Sopra and the Castello di Sotto, set in an old park and crossed by watercourses. You come in through the towered Porta Cisis onto an avenue of 16th-century houses. The castles belonged to the Strassoldo counts, who supplied the Habsburgs with officials and generals, and until 1918 the village was part of Austria-Hungary. Villa Vitas stands just outside the walls among Friuli Aquileia vineyards. There is no nightlife; Cervignano del Friuli, the main town of the comune, is a railway hub.

Only twice a year. The castles are private and open for two weekend events, In primavera on the Palm Sunday weekend and In autunno on the penultimate weekend of October, with craft and plant markets in the grounds.
Choose Strassoldo for a still, inland village, Grado for the lagoon town and its seaside. Grado is about 14 km from Cervignano del Friuli, so beach days from Strassoldo are a short drive.
